Clark Kent Getting a Major Change

♦ by Unknown Monday 22 October 2012

Spoilers ahead.

In this week's Superman #13, new writer Scott Lobdell is shaking things up for the Man of Steel -- he's quitting his decades-long stint of employment at the Daily Planet. As we've seen since Superman #1, the Planet is now part of a corporate conglomerate Galaxy Broadcasting, which both Clark Kent and Lois Lane have taken issue with.

It seems that things will come to a Network-style breaking point that leads Clark to have what USA Today calls a "Jerry Maguire moment," where he up and quits.

"This is really what happens when a 27-year-old guy is behind a desk and he has to take instruction from a larger conglomerate with concerns that aren't really his own," Lobdell told USA Today. "Superman is arguably the most powerful person on the planet, but how long can he sit at his desk with someone breathing down his neck and treating him like the least important person in the world?"

Lobdell explained that he wants to develop Clark as a journalist and a character in and of himself, rather than simply being "clownish suit that Superman puts on."

As for Clark's next place of employment (superheroes need to pay rent too), Lobdell said, "I don't think he's going to be filling put an application anywhere. He is more likely to start the next Huffington Post or the next Drudge Report than he is to go find someone else to get assignments or draw a paycheck from."

Check out the USA Today piece for more with Lobdell.
