Silicon Knights Ordered to Destroy Unsold Unreal Engine 3 Games
♦ by Unknown Friday, 9 November 2012 Wednesday, 7 November 2012 Thursday, 1 November 2012 0 comments
Silicon Knights has been ordered to “recall and destroy” all unsold copies of its games built on Unreal Engine 3. According to a recent ruling by the North Carolina District Court, Silicon Knights shall “cease producing or distributing” and “recall and destroy” all unsold copies of Too Human, The Box/Ritualyst, The Sandman, X-Men: Destiny and Siren in the Maelstrom at its own expense.
A judge also ruled that Silicon Knights must now pay Epic an additional $278,000 in court costs, $2.09 million in attorney fees and $2.3 million in pre-judgment interest. Joined with the previous ruling that Silicon Knights owes Epic $4.45 million, Epic is now owed approximately $9 million.
"Epic Games appreciates the court's careful consideration of the motions and is gratified by the order," an Epic spokesperson told IGN.
The ruling comes more than five years after Silicon Knights sued Epic, alleging that Unreal Engine did not work as it was supposed to. Epic later counter-sued and the case went to trial earlier this year. While Epic eventually won, a judge ruled that even if Silicon Knights had proved victorious, they could only earn $1.
Of the five titles listed in the ruling, Too Human was released in 2008 and X-Men Destiny came out last year. The Box/Ritualyst refers to a canceled psychological thriller project, while Siren in the Maelstrom is the name of a project leaked back in 2009 and The Sandman is presumably an unreleased title.
We’ve reached out to Silicon Knights about the ruling and will update with any comment we receive.

Stormwatch #14 Review
♦ by Unknown Friday, 9 November 2012 Wednesday, 7 November 2012 Thursday, 1 November 2012 0 comments
The loose ties between Demon Knights and Stormwatch have grown much more apparent with this current arc as Etrigan the Demon has awoken and made Stormwatch the target of his wrath. I don't know if it speaks poorly of the series as a whole to say that Etrigan's characterization is currently my favorite element. Peter Milligan writes him as supremely arrogant but also somewhat justified in feeling bitter about being imprisoned for centuries and betrayed by his old team. The fact that Etrigan's tendency to rhyme is exploited for comedy and not overplayed is also a welcome change of pace.
Milligan's characterization for the various Stormwatch members is more spotty, sadly. There's a surprising amount of Claremont-ian exposition at work in this issue as characters ramble on about their powers in the midst of battle. Sexual frustration and repression is a theme Milligan seems intent on focusing upon in these issues. While sound in theory, the execution too frequently falls into the realm of high school melodrama.
As with issue #13, the art is handled by Will Conrad and Cliff Richards on different pages. Conrad unfortunately retains the stiff, CG-enhanced style he usually employs when collaborating with Mike Deodato. I much prefer his more traditional, organic superhero style. Richards' sketchier style isn't a great match either. Inconsistent art is a problem this series has suffered from since the beginning.
The notion that the intention of the story is better than the actual execution seems to speak about the statue of the series as a whole. The story is moving in interesting directions and the ties to the greater fabric of the DCU are increasing. But the characterization and art quality simply aren't where they need to be right now.
